Angelina Maccarone

Angelina Maccarone (*1965 in Cologne) is a director, writer, and was a professor of directing at the Film University Babelsberg from 2014 to 2025. Before dedicating herself to film, she wrote song lyrics, including for Udo Lindenberg, and studied literature.

In 1994, she co-directed her first screenplay, KOMMT MAUSI RAUS?!, which became a queer cult classic, much like ALLES WIRD GUT (EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE)(1997), which won awards at international festivals, including in New York and Los Angeles. Her feature film debut, FREMDE HAUT (UNVEILED), earned her the Hessian Film Award in 2005. In 2006, her film VERFOLGT (HOUNDED) won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. VIVERE gained international recognition and received the Artistic Achievement Award at Outfest Los Angeles in 2007.

She went on to direct several episodes of TATORT and POLIZEIRUF 110.

Her documentary THE LOOK, about and featuring actress Charlotte Rampling, premiered at Cannes in 2011 and was nominated for the German Film Award in 2012. In 2014, she launched an internet and cinema campaign against homophobia together with Carolin Emcke: TOLERANT? SIND WIR SELBER (TOLERANT? THAT‘S US)

In 2017, she won the German Film Award Lola for Best Unfilmed Screenplay for KLANDESTIN (TURNING TABLES) The thriller explores personal emotions within political dimensions, gradually unfolding the intricately woven lives of its characters. In 2024, the film premiered at the Munich Film Festival and was honored as Best Film at the Festival of German Film in Ludwigshafen and the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival.

KLANDESTIN will be released in cinemas on April 24, 2025. Angelina Maccarone lives and works in Berlin.

Angelina Maccarone (*1965 in Köln) ist Regisseurin, Autorin und war von 2014 bis 2025 Professorin für Regie an der Filmuniversität Babelsberg. Bevor sie sich dem Film widmete, schrieb sie Songtexte, unter anderem für Udo Lindenberg, und studierte Literatur.
1994 realisierte sie in Co-Regie ihr erstes Drehbuch KOMMT MAUSI RAUS?!, der zum queeren Kultfilm avancierte, ähnlich wie ALLES WIRD GUT aus dem Jahr 1997, der Preise auf internationalen Festivals gewann, u.a. in New York und Los Angeles. Ihr Kinodebüt FREMDE HAUT brachte ihr 2005 den Hessischen Filmpreis ein. Ihr Film VERFOLGT wurde 2006 in Locarno mit dem Goldenen Leoparden ausgezeichnet. VIVERE fand internationale Beachtung und erhielt 2007 den Artistic Achievement Award auf dem Outfest in Los Angeles.
Es folgten mehrere TATORTE und ein POLIZEIRUF 110.

Ihr Dokumentarfilm THE LOOK über und mit der Schauspielerin Charlotte Rampling feierte 2011 in Cannes Premiere und war 2012 für den Deutschen Filmpreis nominiert. 2014 startete sie gemeinsam mit Carolin Emcke eine Internet- und Kino-Kampagne gegen Homophobie: TOLERANT? SIND WIR SELBER!

2017 wurde sie für KLANDESTIN mit dem Deutschen Filmpreis Lola für das Beste Unverfilmte Drehbuch ausgezeichnet. Der Thriller erzählt von persönlichen Gefühlen in politischen Dimensionen und entfaltet nach und nach die fein verflochtenen Leben seiner Figuren. 2024 hatte der Film auf dem Filmfest München Premiere und wurde als Bester Film beim Festival des Deutschen Films in Ludwigshafen und dem Hamburg International Queer Film Festival geehrt.

Ab 24. April, 2025 kommt KLANDESTIN in die Kinos. 

Angelina Maccarone lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
