Mala Reinhardt

Mala Reinhardt is a documentary filmmaker and producer who completed her directing studies at Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf in 2023, following ethnology studies in Cologne, New Delhi, and Kampala. Her work focuses on untold stories and counter-narratives, particularly from migrant and feminist perspectives.
Her acclaimed film THE SECOND ATTACK (Der Zweite Anschlag, 2018) examines right-wing violence in Germany from the perspective of those affected. It premiered at DOK Leipzig, earning an honorable mention, and was featured at Berlinale in 2021. In 2024, she premiered her feature-length documentary FAMILIAR PLACES at Locarno’s Semaine de la Critique, exploring themes of identity and belonging in a post-migrant society.
Currently, Mala is researching her next project, MOTHER/TONGUE, a hybrid film exploring the intersections of language, migration, and colonial politics. She has participated in mentoring programs like Into the Wild (2020/2021) and Dok.Art by Drehbuchwerkstatt München (2024/2025). Mala is part of Berlinale Talents and Doc Station in 2025 and a German Film ambassador for the Face2Face Campaign 2025.
Alongside filmmaking, Mala teaches at universities, mentors young female filmmakers through GirlsGoMovie, and leads artistic workshops for schools, including at Folkwang University’s Schülerlabor and the German Film Academy’s spots. program.

Mala Reinhardt ist Regisseurin und Produzentin. Sie schloss 2023 ihr Regiestudium an der Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf in Potsdam ab. Zuvor studierte sie Ethnologie in Köln, Neu-Delhi und Kampala. Ihre Arbeit konzentriert sich auf unerzählte Geschichten und Gegennarrative, insbesondere aus migrantischer und feministischer Perspektive.
Ihr Dokumentarfilm DER ZWEITE ANSCHLAG, ein freies Projekt über rechte Gewalt in Deutschland aus der Perspektive der Betroffenen, premierte 2018 auf der DOK Leipzig im Deutschen Wettbewerb (lobende Erwähnung) und wurde 2021 auf der Berlinale gezeigt. 2024 präsentierte Mala ihren abendfüllenden Dokumentarfilm FAMILIAR PLACES bei der Semaine de la Critique des Locarno Film Festivals. Der Film setzt sich mit den Themen Identität und Zugehörigkeit in einer postmigrantischen Gesellschaft auseinander.
Derzeit arbeitet Mala an MUTTER/SPRACHE, einem hybriden Film zu Sprache, Migration und kolonialen Spuren. Sie nahm an Mentoring-Programmen wie Into the Wild (2020/2021) und Dok.Art der Drehbuchwerkstatt München (2024/2025) teil. Mala ist Teil von Berlinale Talents sowie der Doc Station 2025 und Face2Face-Botschafterin der German Films Kampagne 2025.
Neben ihrer Arbeit als Filmemacherin lehrt Mala an Universitäten, unterstützt junge Filmemacherinnen als Mentorin bei GirlsGoMovie und bietet künstlerische Workshops für Schulen an, unter anderem im Schülerlabor der Folkwang Universität der Künste und im spots.-Programm der Deutschen Filmakademie.
